What is Coinetize?

Coinetize is a true on-line micropayment system. That is, it really does facilitate very small payments that happen as soon as a user clicks a link on your page. It's a system designed to make monetizing links on webpages as easy as sending emails.

One way to think of Coinetize is as a kind of paywall proxy. If you have a website, you can allocate some of your pages for Coinetize to filter. Then Coinetize will only let visitors access those pages (photos, movies etc) if those visitors have paid the correct fee.

We're talking small fees here, the kind you wouldn't want a visitor to have to reach for their credit card to pay. This is where the convenience aspect comes in. Once a Coinetize session is established, surfers really do pay as they go - making micropayments each time they click links. And by the way, there's nothing special about these links. They are just the same ordinary links you may well have on your webpage right now.

Why Coinetize?

Coinetize provides a welcome alternative to the subscription payment model. In general internet surfers are turned off when asked to pay a regular subscription - because they are normally only interested in looking at one or two articles on any particular website. Site visitors presented with subscription requests will usually look elsewhere. Put simply, subscriptions have the effect of blocking all except die hard fans.

On the other hand most people agree that creators of work should be fairly rewarded, and if it was simple and convenient to pay a few cents to read an article, view a slideshow or watch a movie - they would do just that. After all, this kind of thing happens in convenience stores every day.

Which brings us to another way of looking at Coinetize - as a kind of online cash card. Take it with you as you browse and beep it on the card reader (speaking metaphorically) when you visit a link. Pay a few cents without any of the pain and annoyance of entering credit card details.

And at the other end, if it's your link, receive those cents almost straight away, with no expensive payment gateway subscription, no setup fees, no credit checks, no business verification procedures and no possibility of chargebacks. Simply link up, and start getting paid.

So what's the catch?

Well, there really isn't one. But you are probably going to think there is when we mention you are going to receive payment in Bitcoin.

Bitcoin? Isn't that risky and volatile?

Let me just take a moment to explain why your worries are unfounded, and why in fact you definitely DO want to receive payment in Bitcoin.

Many services now exist which allow straight exchange of Bitcoin into dollars (pounds, yen, or whatever currency). If you are worried about holding Bitcoin, keep a wallet with any of these guys and you can convert payments practically as soon as they arrive. Since payments on our site are pegged to the dollar, converting back immediately means you are effectively not exposed to any fluctuations in the exchange rate. In addition many bitcoin exchanges now insure their deposits, so you have peace of mind regarding any funds you leave with them.

Recommended Bitcoin Wallet Providers

We have identified the following bitcoin wallet providers as
  • having fully insured deposit accounts
  • maintaining a high level of security
  • offering bitcoin exchange services
Circle
CoinHako
Xapo

But we are not proposing you keep much Bitcoin, or try to use it as a store of value.

We are proposing you use Bitcoin for the purpose it is really good at - as a medium of exchange.

You definitely want to receive Bitcoin, because with Bitcoin, at the moment when payment is issued, you actually get paid. There is no complicated process involving banks and payment gateways in between, and most importantly no possibility of the payment being withheld, cancelled, "charged back" before it makes it into your pocket.

Ask yourself this: would you rather I paid you in cash, or I wrote you a cheque?

That, essentially, is the difference.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if your business could just take cash at point of sale? The 'Account Receivables' column on your balance sheet would be a thing of the past, together with the allowance you need to make for a proportion of those receivables which you end up writing off.

Bitcoin is digital cash. And we are proposing to pay you it at point of sale. Why would you not want that?

But the argument doesn't end there. Consider whether you would accept a cheque or a credit card for a payment of 50 cents? This kind of small payment is the red blood cell of economies world-wide, and yet so far these transactions only happen face to face. Bitcoin enables remote payment of small amounts such as 50 cents.

Choose to accept Bitcoin with Coinetize and choose to accept small payments you couldn't otherwise. It's really that simple.

Ok but most people don't have bitcoin. How can they pay me if they don't have any?

Coinetize actually works via a system of "Coinetize Credits". People can use their credit card to buy Coinetize Credits. Then when click your links they spend their Credits, and you get your Bitcoin. So your site visitors don't actually need to own Bitcoin.

In fact the Credit system is designed to give you all the benefits of credit cards without the drawbacks.

All this talk about 'account receivables' makes it sound like Coinetize is just for businesses, right?

Actually we really think Coinetize is for everybody, and is really well suited to the needs of the individual as well as any business. If you have so much as a simple blog, you can start receiving payment for articles or photos on that blog.

Let's say you had just one item you wanted to sell for a dollar - a brochure perhaps, tickets to your party, an online tutorial - or even a cake recipe. Coinetize means you can do just that, with no overheads, hassle free.

What other things could I sell using Coinetize?

Here are some suggestions (asorted):

short stories, novels, poetry, home videos, promo videos, corporate videos, tutorials, brochures, catalogues, song lyrics, riddles, sheet music, portraits, games, namelists, access codes, address information, parking permits, recipes, engineering schematics, scientific papers, financial projections, business plans, family tree information, entrance tickets, timetables, directions, event information, conference proceedings...

Can I do anything else with my Coinetize account?

Well.. you can buy things too! Your account can be used both for buying other people's resources, and for selling your own.

What kind of verification procedure do I need to get my Coinetize account?

There is no verification procedure. We just need you to supply an email address, and choose a username and password.

What about fees? How much does this service cost?

We do not charge set up fees, subscription fees and have no intention of ever doing so. Nor are we planning to deduct any fee when we collect payment - though of course the credit card payment gateway might.

We take a fee of 8 % at the point of sale. This means when a visitor to your website clicks a link on your site, we take 8% of the visitors payment - and the other 92% goes to you.

What is installed on my website during the linking process?

Nothing is installed. During the verification procedure we request you create a text file containing a verification code. We also ask you to arrange your pages in a certain way. However, all of this is under your control, and we never need access to your webserver.

What is "locking"?

Say you have a web-page that you have monetized. How about the photos and movies on that page? Are these part of what you want to charge for, or not part of the package?

You probably don't care about things like icons. On the other hand in some cases a photo could be the most important thing on the page. For example if you are a photographer selling hi-res quality photography.

Locking lets you associate an image or a movie to a web-page. This means the image or movie can only be accessed via the web-page it's locked to.
